OUR NOMAD HOSTEL
PHANGNGA ROAD, PHUKET
Among cultural and architectural heritage of Phuket's old town, we renovated a 25-year-old shop-house into a brand new hostel by collecting the characteristic of local heritage and the identity of Our Nomad brand.
Apart from introducing a new facade and interior organisation, we chose to keep the old structural work and arcade space, which portray signature space of this archetype, called Ngor-ka-kee. One of our notions of a good architecture is that it should blend into the local heritage of the site. That is, Our Nomad Hostel orchestrates its own brand identity of American mid-century and the Phuket's Sino-Portuguese architectural styles.
We interpreted this combination as an Chinese-born American who has contemporary and international character. When look closely into each space, the cafe and bar on ground floor manifest a high degree of Phuket's characteristic, but on the other hand, as one moves through to upper space, the American mid-century gradually replace such characteristic.
The snowy white architecture stands still among the busy and color-scattered road of Phuket. The delicate expanded metal facade wrapped up the two uppermost floors of the hostel, screening for privacy and shading the afternoon sun.
Second floor of the building serves as a large living room for hostel guests to meet and exchange their travel experiences. The hostel offers a variety of room types for backpackers, couples, friends, or even family, ranging from dormitory-style room to private king bed with Netflix service.
The design of this hostel results in clean and simple architecture, yet guests can experience the rich culture of both styles in the interior that should be conceptualized as the new mixture of local heritage and modern norm.
